Selecting IT for higher education??? Then chek this out....

There are only 3 options left to a srilankan student after doing A/Ls, and they are:
1)going to a government university
2)doing a job
3)doing a degree from a private institute

Most of the students will not get a chance to get into a government university, but doing a job without a degree is also not considerable these days so the ultimate option of the most students will be doing a degree in a private institute.

Private higher education institutes in srilanka do not have a good variety of undergraduate degrees, most of the institutes only have degrees related in INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, So the outcome of IT professionals has been increased during last 5 years.

Therefore these days most of the students do not pay much attention on IT field, but as I see IT job market is developing everyday and new technology add more departments to IT field(such as android & i OS) so on my opinion doing IT or computer science is a good option to  school leavers.

On the other hand government has given permission to establish private universities in srilanka so now there are lots of engineering degrees to do(CINEC,ICBT,SLIIT,SAITEM,)
Therefor the number of students who is doing IT has been decreased.and that is a good point to the guys who are doing IT because then the competition in the job market will be reduced.

Under all these circumstances my opinion will be that doing IT is not a problem at all. My advice to young school leavers is that don't be afraid to select IT as your higher education path if you really have a interest in it. GOOD LUCK. ;-)

If you are still doing O/ls read this artical on how to choose a A/l subject

  5. I considered both facts that there has been a huge incline of the intake of IT students for the last five years and there were less opportunities for them, now their is a decline and there might be a slight chance of having a wider job market.
I am amazed that because you have only taken to account the students who are studying here in SL. What will happen when the students studying abroad come back to SL?
I see a possible Scarcity in terms of finding a proper job opportunity. It doesn't matter whether they are opening new institutes in SL (do you think more the merrier for you??). Where are the jobs?
It is not correct for you to decide that opening many institutions of IT would indulge students to turn to different areas other than IT, bearing the fear of being unemployed for a long time.
Still most would find IT is interesting and see it as a dream job, which is not currently.
Most probably majority will be engaged in the private sector. Let me know if there are companies who are willing to mass intake freshers as their interns.
As i have been already convinced, most of the IT students will not get a sufficient salary for many years; unless of course :) , you invent the next big thing in the world of IT.
Thousands of students are graduated every year in SL.
For at-least another 5 to 10 years there will be a difficulty in finding a suitable and well paid job if you are an IT geek. I am not sure with the current politics in the country there shall be a hope for this at all, since our ministers are proposing to ban GOOGLE and USA products. "Ala Bathala wawagena kana kalayak ennath bari na"

However, i will NOT discourage any of you who has selected IT as your future. IF you think you can do it, it is worth taking the risk.

It is my hope that there will be a better opportunity for you fellas in the future. $

    1. hey stormedgrx.. thanks for ur valuable feedback..
the facts that you are pointing out are seems true..
but i havn't seen any IT man just sitting without a proper job..
as they say they have to work for a small salary only in training period and after that all of them Get more than 30000Rs per month.. so IT doesnt sound bad to me.. but i really appreciate your points... they give us something to think about before doing IT.. and thank you for remembering me abt the students who study IT abroad and coming back to SL for a job, thats also a one good point that i should have concerned before writing the post...

anyway thanks a lot for your valuable comment.. :)

  7. How much does an average Degree for IT cost? Then you are getting paid Rs.30,000. Bro, may be according to Bandula Gunawardena it is more than enough. But I doubt in reality would it suffice?? after spending roughly Rs.1 million for a private uni degree? How much do you think you can save from that Rs.30,000? Rs.7,500? I highly doubt it. An average person needs more than that to live a comfortable life. For god's sake you hold a degree!! Just after A/L's you can easily get a minimum wage of 30K. May be more with all the allowances. (Ask Irfan, Mosapuka) So I am really not sure about what you're saying. (No offence, just joined the conversation)
